How To Prepare For Your Test

Ultrasound of the Abdomen, UGI, Esophagram or Small Bowel Series
Nothing to eat or drink after midnight, or for 8 hours preceding the exam.

Ultrasound of the Pelvis or Urinary Bladder
You may eat prior to exam. Empty bladder, then drink 32 oz. of clear liquid (non-Carbonated) ​90 minutes prior to time of appointment. (All of the liquid should be finished 1 hour before so that your bladder will be full for the study.) Do not go to the bathroom until the test is completed.

Do not use any deodorant, powder or cream to the underarm or breast area on the morning of your procedure. Please bring all previous mammograms and their corresponding reports with you. Patients who have had recent surgery should bring films that were taken before, during and after surgery. If possible, please obtain and bring a copy of your pathology report.

CT or MRI of the Abdomen/Pelvis
Nothing to eat or drink (except medications) 4 hours prior to appointment. For all other contrast studies and for coronary CTA, please call the Radiology Department for specific instructions.

Barium Enema
Please call the Radiology Department directly for specific instructions.

Indications for obtaining serum creatinine prior to IV contrast administration:
Serum creatinine within 30 days is required for patients who have one or more of the following:
  • Age 60 years or older
  • History of renal disease
  • Prior renal surgery
  • Renal transplant
  • Hypertension requiring medical therapy
  • Solitary kidney
  • When reliable history cannot be obtained
  • Diabetes
