Hahnemann University Hospital’s Transgender Surgical Program, led by board certified plastic surgeon Kathy L. Rumer, DO, FACOS, offers the Male to Female (MTF) and Female to Male (FTM) gender confirming surgeries. Patients also have access to face, breast, and chest, body contouring and other related procedures. Dr. Rumer is the director of the Transgender Surgical Program.
The launch of this program is the first for an academic medical center in the Philadelphia region. Here at Hahnemann University Hospital, we are dedicated to providing our patients with the highest quality of care. We work to create a welcoming and comfortable environment for those who are undergoing gender confirmation.
After surgery, most patients recover on a dedicated post-surgical unit. Clinical nursing staff is specially trained to care for patients recovering from gender confirmation surgery.
Procedures Offered at Hahnemann University Hospital include:
Male to Female (MTF) Penile Inversion Vaginoplasty
Facial Feminization Surgery
Female to Male (FTM) Metoidioplasty
Chest Surgery and Chest Contouring
This is not an all-encompassing list of the procedures offered at Hahnemann.
An increasing number of insurance plans are offering coverage for gender confirmation surgery. Even with insurance coverage, patients may still be responsible for fees such as deductibles, co-insurance, and portions of the surgical procedure not covered by insurance.
Patients interested in gender confirming surgery must meet certain requirements, depending on specific procedures, as specified by their insurance company or the World Professional Association for Transgender Health (WPATH) Standards of Care.
Every surgical procedure involves a certain amount of risk, and it is important that each patient understand the risks involved. Potential risks are reviewed with patients at the time of consultation.
