The prevention and early detection of cancer is a key focus at Hahnemann University Hospital. This is especially true in working with colon, esophageal, rectal and liver cancers.
Many digestive tract cancers are preventable by detecting and treating early warning signs, including colon polyps, colitis, chronic hepatitis, Barrett’s esophagitis and hemochromatosis. If you have one of these diseases or are at risk for them, you may benefit from our education programs, screening, diagnosis and access to innovative therapies.
Colorectal and Gastrointestinal Cancer Treatment
At Hahnemann, our multidisciplinary specialists provide comprehensive care and advanced treatment options. We use state-of-the-art technology and techniques to identify tumors of the pancreas and stomach wall, and early stage tumors of the esophagus, stomach and rectum. Our minimally invasive diagnostic approaches allow us to help you or your loved one choose the appropriate treatment option.
Our colorectal surgeons are also able to use minimally invasive laparoscopic techniques for eligible cancer patients. This procedure involves removing the tumor through a much smaller incision, offering the potential for less postoperative pain, shorter hospital stays and a faster recovery. We also offer same-day surgery for some early-stage rectal cancer patients where a transanal excision is performed rather than an incision on the outside of the body.
Inflammatory Bowel Disease
At Hahnemann, you’ll have access to an internationally recognized team of doctors and health care professionals who can help with the prevention, diagnosis and management of Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. We provide ongoing medical and surgical care, with support from our team of dietary personnel, social service professionals, stomal therapists, psychiatrists and consultation with subspecialty doctors.
Hahnemann University Hospital is affiliated with the Drexel University College of Medicine, whose Kranser Center for Inflammatory Bowel Disease is introducing exciting new therapies in clinical trials.
Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD)
You can find expertise on GERD, a disorder caused by the reflux of gastric contents into the esophagus and upper airway, with the specialists at Hahnemann. We offer a continuum of medical and surgical treatment for reflux disease, including identifying those who may be at risk. Our doctors place a strong emphasis on the importance of diet and offer expert surgical talent and experience should you need surgery.
One important area of expertise that we offer is in Barrett’s esophagitis, a disease that develops from gastroesophageal reflux and can lead to adenocarcinoma of the esophagus, a serious form of cancer. With the surveillance techniques that Hahnemann doctors employ, we can help to prevent the majority of these cancers.
