Hahnemann University Hospital Receives Approval to Start HIV-Positive to HIV-Positive Organ Transplants

Hahnemann University Hospital has received approval from the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) to begin HIV-positive to HIV-positive liver and kidney transplantations. This means Hahnemann is among the first transplant centers in the Philadelphia region approved to offer this potentially life-saving service to patients with end-stage organ disease.

The HIV Organ Policy Equity (HOPE) Act, signed into law by President Obama in 2013, paved a path for select transplant centers to utilize donor organs infected with HIV, as part of a research effort focused on safety and increasing access to care. For the first time in the United States, individuals with HIV will be permitted to donate their organs for transplantation to other patients with HIV. This act provides patients with increased access to suitable organs for potentially life-saving transplants.

In order to participate in HOPE Act transplants, Hahnemann received approval from the Institutional Review Board (IRB) and UNOS demonstrating the hospital meets new federal standards for research on HIV-positive organ transplantation. Hahnemann is one of two transplant programs in the U.S. that currently have UNOS approval for HOPE.

Hahnemann University Hospital completed its first kidney transplant for a patient with HIV in 2002, and since then, has transplanted more than 110 HIV patients. Hahnemann performs the largest number of transplants for HIV-positive patients in the region, and is one of the largest HIV transplant centers in the nation. Hahnemann also has the largest HIV-positive transplant patient waitlist in the region.

Hahnemann University Hospital evaluates many HIV-positive transplant candidates and is currently offering this endeavor as one of several available treatment options.
