Cardiac Service

Hahnemann offers a comprehensive cardiac care program from routine outpatient studies to heart transplantation. Used as a bridge to heart transplant or to heart recovery, cardiac assist devices, both short- and long-term, are also routinely implanted. Hahnemann is also one of only five sites where the first fully implantable artificial hearts were implanted in 2001.

Five inpatient units, including 198 beds on four floors, are dedicated to cardiac patients. As an adjunct to our medical staff, highly trained nurse practitioners offer specialized care to our cardiac patients.

Our cardiac catheterization program is one of the busiest in the region. We perform thousands of diagnostic procedures and interventions each year including:

We also offer:

  • Electrophysiology--Electronic mapping and ablation; pacemakers; lead extraction; internal defirilaltors and radiofrequency ablation of arrhythmias plus the Medtronic cardiac resysnchronizaiton system for heart failure patients.
  • Echocardiology--Intracardiac ultrasound; myocardial contrast; and
3-D echo technology is available for diagnosis of many heart diseases.
  • Nuclear cardiology--The cardiovascular nuclear imaging laboratory offers inpatient and outpatient stress test and nuclear imaging studies, using advanced equipment and software. The lab is actively involved in research studies for developing new techniques for the detection of coronary artery disease, for imaging atherosclerosis and for imaging cell heart muscle damage in patients with heart disease.

The Cardiothoracic Surgical Program provides a wide spectrum of surgical care and maintains one of the region's top-tier programs. Coronary bypass procedures are performed either using the heart lung machine or with new off-pump techniques.

Heart valve surgical procedures include repair or replacement using mechanical, tissue, or human valves. Many cardiac procedures use a minimally invasive technique known as "keyhole" surgery, which requires only small incisions and may allow for a faster recovery.

New non-invasive procedures include the heart patch to close patent formen ovale and coronary radiation for the prevention of restenosis.

The Heart Failure/Transplant Program is comprised of several hundred patients who are followed from selection to the program through follow-up care. Along with highly skilled physician and nursing care, our Heart Failure/Transplant unit features a home-like atmosphere for patients who are awaiting a transplant.
