Though back pain may be severe or mild, The Spine Center at Hahnemann University Hospital can help patients return to their normal activities as quickly as possible. What makes The Spine Center different from other back pain centers is its comprehensive approach to treatment. The program is headed by neurosurgeons who work together with orthopaedists, neurologists and anesthesiologists to help manage pain and to outline a treatment regimen. The least invasive treatment options are considered first—with surgery always the last resort.
Whether back pain is severe or mild, The Spine Center at Hahnemann helps put patients BACK on track.
Back pain is usually associated with workplace injuries and weekend warriors, but the fact is that more than 80 percent of adults will have to limit their normal acitivities at least once in their lifetime due to low back pain. In patients under the age of 45, low back pain is the number one cause of disability; in patients over 45, it ranks number two. Despite these staggering statistics, patients need not resign themselves to a life of pain and restricted activity. With proper diagnosis, treatments and techniques, The Spine Center may help patients return to normal activities within a short period of time.

What makes The Spine Center different from some other back pain centers is our comprehensive approach to treatment. Our spine specialist works with other doctors, including neurologists and anesthesiologists, to help manage pain and to outline a treatment regimen. The range of treatments for low back pain is as broad as the causes of the pain itself. Our philosophy at The Spine Center is to begin with the least invasive treatment options first. Surgery is always the last resort.
While patients suffering with severe or chronic back pain are obvious candidates for referral, our program is designed to treat ALL back pain. We use diagnostic studies and treatment programs prescribed specifically for each individual, based on symptoms and history. Our goal is to relieve pain, improve functional ability, and return patients to a normal lifestyle as quickly and efficiently as possible.
Depending on the individual patient's symptoms, diagnostic studies may be necessary to determine a proper diagnosis and prescribe the appropriate treatment. Diagnostic studies are recommended based on each patient's need for further definitive information. Some of the latest noninvasive and invasive imaging studies, including MRI, advanced CT scanning, myelography, and discography, are readily available at The Spine Center.
Many patients with low back pain need a proper exercise program to rid themselves of nagging pain. Our physical therapists provide exercise and reconditioning programs specifically designed to fit each patient's therapeutic needs. They discuss the daily activities of work and play with each patient to suggest ergonomic solutions to avoid future bouts of low back pain. They also design a prophylactic exercise program for each patient to prevent recurrences.
The treatment approach of The Spine Center is to avoid surgery if at all possible. However, a small percentage of of patients fail to get relief from other treatment options and require surgery to return to a normal lifestyle. Fortunately, The Spine Center specializes in some of the most progressive and least invasive surgical techniques. This may help patients to reutrn to work and play within the shortest time frame possible.
Patients injured at work often require specialized treatment to allow them to return to their pre-injury status. Work hardening, work reconditioning and work simulation programs are available for individuals requiring more advanced therapeutic rehabilitation. We also conduct functional capacity evaluations to assess the feasibility of having the injured worker return to specific work requirements. Along the way, we foster and maintain strong communications between the treating physician and the case manager. Our goal is to work toward a quick recovery.
Special back injury prevention and "Healthy Back" programs are available for a wide array of recreational and occupational groups. It's all part of our comprehensive approach to caring for the patient with low back pain.
