The Department of Medicine includes physicians trained in general internal medicine and most of its subspecialties. The department provides extensive training in internal medicine for the residency program at Drexel University College of Medicine. Our wide range of services include:

  • Nephrology–evaluation and treatment of disorders of the kidneys and urogenital system, including outpatient and inpatient hemodialysis. The hospital performs a high volume of kidney transplantation on patients with endstage renal disease.
  • Pulmonary–evaluation of diseases of the lung and bronchial tree including emphysema, lung cancer, sacroid and many other disorders. Diagnostic procedures include bronchoscopy and biopsy of the lung. The division is responsible teaching in the hospital's medical intensive care units, as well as for providing patient care. The Sleep Center, a joint project with the Department of Neurology, evaluates sleep-related disorders.
  • Hematology/Oncology–performs diagnostic evaluations for diseases of the blood and hematopoietic system. The Cancer Center treats patients with solid tumors and hematologic malignancies. In addition, it has many research initiatives and participates in numerous national trials. Bone marrow transplantation has been performed at Hahnemann since 1983. "Mini" BMT and adjuvant chemotherapy trials for prostate cancer are current initiatives.
  • Cardiology–perfroms diagnostic and interventioanl evaluations for diseases related to cardiovascular, heart failure and dysrhythmias. In addition to cardiac research, we are center for heart transplants and bi-ventricular assists devices that aide as a bridge transfer.
  • Gastrointestinal–provides a wide range of consultative service in gastroenterology and hepatology. A modern and fully equipped endoscopy unti evaluates diseases of the upper and lower GI tracts, as well as evaluation of the biliary tree and screening for colon cancer.
  • General Medicine–high quality medical care covering a spectrum of non-surgical disorders. A large medical residency program at Drexel University College of Medicine trains the general internists and specialists of the future.
