For generations, Philadelphians have begun life at Hahnemann University Hospital And, HUH is continuing to meet the growing obstetrical and neonatal demands of the city with its newly renovated unit on June 20.
After a year of major construction and renovation, the new OB unit encompasses an entire floor of the South and North towers, occupying a total of 33,000 square feet. The unit includes seven labor and delivery rooms (one with a Jacuzzi) and three private triage rooms. Additionally, there are eight additional private postpartum and eight semi-private rooms, totaling 24 postpartum beds. The rooms, which are decorated with oak wood and mauve and burgundy upholstery, offer a home-like setting and relaxing atmosphere, with fully adjustable beds, televisions, and rocking chairs.
Some of the country’s leading obstetricians, including department chair Mark I Evans, MD, and co-chair Ronald J. Wapner, MD, specializing in high-risk pregnancies, perinatologists, neonatologists, infertility specialists, midwives, and nurses staff the newly renovated facility to provide patients and their newborns with top quality care.
The newly renovated facility includes a 16-bed Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Nursery (NICU) with expert staff specializing in the care of critically ill newborns. Pediatric sub-specialty services including pediatric cardiology, gastroenterology and neurology are also readily available through St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children’s physicians and surgeons.
Nurse-midwives continue to have a strong presence at Hahnemann, teaching families in Childbirth Education Program about the physical and emotional changes that occur during pregnancy and childbirth. The nurse-midwives, who work in conjunction with obstetricians, will also provide hands-on support from early labor through birth.
