Hahnemann has long been at the forefront in the treatment of hematologic and oncologic diseases. Comprehensive diagnostics are available on site through a number of private associated practices and hospital facilities including advanced laboratory and imaging services.

There are two inpatient units dedicated to hematology/oncology; one offers skilled care to all types of patients undergoing treatment for such diseases, while the other is a specialized unit for bone marrow transplant patients and immunosuppressed patients. This Controlled Environment Oncology Unit (CEOU) is comprised of 12 laminar air flow rooms, which recent studies have shown is the best means to isolate aplastic patients.

Bone marrow transplant (BMT) is a treatment modality for leukemia, lymphoma, multiple myeloma, myelodysplasia, and selected breast cancer patients. "Mini-transplants" with abbreviated conditioning regimens are available for older patients with hematologic malignancies. The Hahnemann Transplant Program has a graft engineering program available of transplant recipients. Hahnemann is unique in offering all four types of transplant: autologous, allogeneic, matched unrelated and a peripheral stem cell program. Educational sessions prior to transplant for patient and family are a key part of the BMT program, and all treatment and care delivery is driven by current protocols.

The Hahnemann Breast Health Center is a joint effort among many disciplines: surgical, radiation and medical oncology, diagnostic radiology, pathology, occupational therapy, nursing and psychology. The center provides convenient and efficient breast cancer screening, risk factor counseling and timely scheduling of diagnostic procedures. All patients with breast cancer have the advantage of multidisciplinary assessment in a single location to provide optimal treatment planning.

The center provides additional supportive services for the holistic approach to the treatment of breast cancer patients under the direction of a nurse coordinator: counseling and support groups, Reach to Recovery, reduced rate screening mammography, biannual screening projects, community education presentations, patient education and risk assessment.

The hematology program in conjunction with Johns Hopkins University Hospital has also been in the forefront of the treatment of autoimmune diseases such as aplastic anemia, systemic lupus, erythematosus, hemolytic anemia and Guillain-Barre with high-dose immunoablative Cyclophosphamide.
