   MidAtlantic MedEvac–When Minutes Matter
MidAtlantic MedEvac is an air medical transport program operated by Hahnemann University Hospital in Philadelphia. Initiating operations in early 1987, MidAtlantic MedEvac operates Sikorsky S-76 and AEC BK117 helicopters, our services include operations directly from the scene of injury as well as emergency inter-hospital transports. Since 1997, our operational capability has also included inflight instrument weather conditions, giving even greater service to our patients.

Operational Readiness

Using a helicopter for medical transport saves precious time while providing appropriate patient care. Efficient and highly effective communications and computer technology, combined with an ongoing state of preparedness, enable us to respond quickly while maintaining a very safe operating environment.

Our team includes flight nurses, flight medics, pilots, mechanics and communications technicians. The team is specially trained for air medical transport service and works diligently to keep the aircraft and equipment ready to respond rapidly. Experience is a great asset.

Scope of Services

MidAtlantic MedEvac provides critical care and emergency air medical transport for patients with illnesses or injuries categorized as follows:


  • Serious Traumatic Injuries
  • Acute Cardiac Disease or Illness
  • Serious Neurological Illnesses
  • Perinatal Emergencies
  • Serious Burns involving 50% BSA or Inhalation Burns
  • Severe Respiratory Illnesses
  • Serious Gastro-intestinal Disorders
  • Special Pediatric Emergencies
  • Vascular Emergencies
  • Critical Care Medical Emergencies Requiring Tertiary Care
  • Other Emergencies Threatening Life or Limb


Patients of all age groups are included.

The MidAtlantic MedEvac  medical flight team consists of a flight nurse and a flight paramedic, each specially trained and equipped to care for patients with the illnesses or injuries and age groups outlined above. Qualifications and training include:

  • CCRN or RNCEN and PA Health Professional certification for flight nurses
  • PA EMT-P certification for flight paramedics
  • ACLS and PHTLS Certification
  • Audit of ATLS Course
  • PALS Certification
  • MidAtlantic MedEvac Medical Flight Team Member Training


Additional supplemental clinical personnel may be added for specialty pediatric or neonatal transports.

The geographical coverage area for MidAtlantic MedEvac  includes eastern Pennsylvania. southeastern New York, New Jersey, Delaware and northeastern Maryland. This area is bounded approximately by lines connecting White Plains ,NY, Sayre, PA, Washington, DC and Cape May, NJ.
