Hahnemann offers full-service diagnostics, including advanced laboratory and imaging services. A number of specialized multi-disciplinary centers manage treatment of central nervous tumors, ocular tumors, skin malignancies and breast cancer. Access to many national cooperative group trials may be available to select patients. Radiation Oncology Hahnemann continues a high level of expertise in the management of both benign (non-cancerous) and malignant (cancerous) lesions with radiation treatment. The department offers stereotactic radiosurgery, total body irradiation, intraoperative radiation therapy, ocular brachytherapy and 3-D treatment planning, a technique that preserves areas surrounding the cancerous tumor. We are involved in research in various clinical studies, including pediatric oncology. Surgical Oncology Advanced surgical techniques are used in the treatment of cancers of the esophagus, stomach, kidney, small intestine and colon. Rectal cancer is treated with a multidisciplinary approach. Metastatic cancer of the liver is aggressively treated with methods that may include liver resection, cryoablation, radiofrequency ablation and hepatic artery pumps. The surgical oncology service also offers procedures for lung cancer, melanoma and soft tissue sarcomas of the chest, abdomen and extremities. Hahnemann is the first hospital in Philadelphia to use cryoblation, a minimally invasive technique for treatment of prostate cancer. Medical Oncology The medical oncology program provides comprehensive quality cancer care for a variety of neoplastic diseases including leukemia, lymphoma and malignant solid tumors. As members of the Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group, we participate in various NIH-sponsored clinical trials, including the use of non-myeloblative bone marrow mini-transplants for the treatment of breast cancer and chronic leukemia. This treatment is often gentler and has fewer side effects than a standard bone marrow transplant. Hahnemann is one of only six institutions in the nation designated to conduct this trial. Immuno-compromised patients are cared for in the controlled environment oncology unit (CEOU), an isolation area equipped with laminar air flow rooms. This specialized filtering system removes dust and organisms from the air to help reduce the patients' risk of infection and recovery. Bone Marrow Transplant Hahnemann began performing transplants in 1976 and currently offers this treatment modality for leukemia, lymphoma, multiple myeloma and myelodysplasia. A graft engineering program is available, as well as four types of transplant: autologous, allogenic, matched unrelated and a peripheral stem cell program. Patients remain in the CEOU (see description above) during their stay. As part of the National Marrow Donor Program, we are both a transplant and a harvesting procurement site. Marrow transplants are possible from volunteer unrelated donors for patients with leukemia, lymphoma and other blood disorders. Mini-transplants with abbreviated conditioning regimens are available for older patients with hematologic malignancies. Breast Health Center Breast cancer patients can benefit from the center's multidisciplinary approach, which includes specialists from surgery, radiation and medical oncology, diagnostic radiology, pathology, occupational therapy, nursing, and psychology. The center provides convenient breast cancer screening, risk factor counseling and timely scheduling of diagnostic procedures. Our staff encourages participation in well-designed clinical research trials that may lead to improved patient outcomes.
